Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania 23

WE MADE IT PEOPLE!!! For 22 straight days I’ve counted down every single Wrestlemania and now we’ve finally reached the end. Before I go ahead with the recap of Wrestlemania 23 lets just go over the main thing you should have learned about Wrestlemania in the past 22 days. Wrestlemania is never ever good from top to bottom for every match as good as Stone Cold vs Brett Hart there are at least 3 matches as bad as Kane vs Khali in fact any Wrestlemania with more then 3 great matches on the card should be considered a classic. With that said lets get to Wrestlemania 23.

Wrestlemania 23 set an all-time attendance record of 80,103 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. The show also had one of the highest Wrestlemania buyrates ever with 1.2 million buys. The event was also the largest audience to assemble for a WWE event since SummerSlam 1992, which attracted 80,355 to Wembley Stadium in London, England. Aretha Franklin performed “America the Beautiful” at the start of the event, reprising her role from twenty years earlier at Wrestlemania III. Believe it or not this is the 5th consecutive Wrestlemania without an Intercontinental Championship match on the card and the 4th with the IC Champion being active on the card. Chris Benoit made his final Wrestlemania appearance when he defeated MVP to retain the United States Championship. Donald Trump made his third Wrestlemania appearance this time as apart of the show in the infamous Hair vs Hair match with Vince McMahon.

The Wold Heavyweight Championship match put The Undertaker’s 14 and 0 Wrestlemania streak against the champion Batista. After an exchange of several devastating attacks, including a Batista Bomb, Undertaker sealed his victory with a Tombstone Piledriver to keep his Wrestlemania streak alive. This was the fourth year in a row that the World Heavyweight Championship has changed hands at Wrestlemania. In the evenings final match Shawn Michaels took on John Cena for the WWE Championship this was Cena’s third year in a row competing for the WWE Championship in the main event. Like the previous two years John Cena would come out victorious bring his Wrestlemania record to 4 and 0.

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania 22

2440326.jpg

Tickets sold out in under two minutes for Wrestlemania 22 in Chicago, Illinois. Wrestlemania 22 marked the first Wrestlemania not to feature the winner of the Royal Rumble in the final match of the night since Wrestlemania XV in 1999. CM Punk made his Wrestlemania debut as one of the “gangsters” in John Cena entrance. Bobby Lashley also made his Wrestlemania debut in the Money In The Bank Ladder Match.

The World Heavyweight Championship match was a triple treat that featured Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton and the champion Kurt Angle. This was Randy Orton’s first time competing in the main event at Wrestlemania. The match at just 9 minutes and 18 seconds was the shortest for a world championship in Wrestlemania history. Rey Mysterio pinned Randy Orton for the victory giving him his first World Heavyweight Championship.  Mysterio at only 5’8 and 165lbs would go down in history as the smallest World Heavyweight Champion in history. Because the pin fall was scored on Randy Orton this made the third time Kurt Angle would lose a championship at Wrestlemania without submitting or being pinned.

In the WWE Championship match Triple H faced off against the champion John Cena although Cena was being booked as a babyface the majority of the capacity crowd was against the WWE Champion. After 22 minutes and 2 second Cena forced Triple H to submit with the STFU. Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania XX

90576.jpg

Wrestlemania returned to “The World’s Most Famous Arena” with Wrestlemania XX this was the third time Madison Square Garden hosted the event. The United States Championship was defended for the first time in Wrestlemania history when Big Show faced off against John Cena who was making his Wrestlemania debut. As a result of a pre-match stipulation, Molly Holly had her head shaven clean by Victoria when she was unable to capture the Women’s Championship. The Rock made his very last appearance as a competitor in the WWE at Wrestlemania XX when he re-united the Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection in a Handicap Match against Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista and Ric Flair). After an extended absence, Paul Bearer returned to WWE at Wrestlemania XX when a accompanied The Undertaker to the ring for his match against Kane.

Chris Benoit had been waiting 18 years to finally get a shot at the World Championship after winning the Royal Rumble the then SmackDown! Superstar decided to jump ship to the RAW brand to face Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. Shawn Michaels interrupted the contract signing, though, and hit Benoit with the Sweet Chin Music. With Benoit knocked out, Michaels signed the contract. General Manager Eric Bischoff settled the controversy and made the match a Triple Threat Match. During the epic battle Triple H looked ready to lock in the Pedigree on Benoit but Benoit somehow reversed it into the Crippler Crossface, and with Michaels out on the floor, Triple H tapped out. This was Benoit’s second time winning the World Heavy Weight Championship but was his first and only time holding it since both the title and Benoit moved to the WWE.

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania XIV

The Fleetcenter in Boston, MA played host to Wrestlemania XIV and there were tons of firsts. Wrestlemania XIV marked the first time the European Championship was defended at a Wrestlemania and it was also the first and only time that the Light Heavyweight Championship was defended at a Wrestlemania event. For the first time WWE Hall of Famer announcing duo Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross called the event without Vince McMahon. Pete Rose made his first of several Wrestlemania appearances when he was attacked by Kane, Rose’s continued Wrestlemania appearances earned him a spot in the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame. That night in an interview with Gennifer Flowers The Rock used the term “if you smell what The Rock is cooking” for the first time. In yet another first The Undertaker faced off with his kayfabe brother Kane for the very first time.

The main event for Wrestlemania XIV was “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels(c) for the WWF Championship. Because of his severe injury back injury many thought this would be Shawn Michaels last match ever but of course HBK eventually returned to the ring four years later. To maintain safety in the WWF Championship match Mr. McMahon hired a special enforcer “Iron” Mike Tyson, the self-proclaimed baddest man on the planet. Despite the fact that it appeared as though Tyson had joined Michaels, Triple H and Chyna in D-Generation X in the weeks prior to event, Iron Mike was still allowed to play his part in the match. In the end, Tyson proved to be completely impartial. In fact, when the appointed official was unable to continue due to injury, Mike even counted the three count, ending the match and giving Stone Cold his first WWE Championship. That moment is considered the beginning of the WWE’s “Attitude Era”.

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania XII

Live from Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, CA Wrestlemania XII saw the Wrestlemania debut of two future legends “Stone Cold” Steve Austin(wrestling under the name “The Ringmaster”) and Triple H. Triple H accompanied to the ring by Sable who was making her WWE debut was defeated by the returning The Ultimate Warrior who was wrestling in the WWE for first time 12 years. Although Warrior swashed Triple H in just 1 minute and 36 seconds this would be his final Wrestlemania appearance. Wrestlemania XII was also the first Wrestlemania that didn’t have Intercontinental Championship match on the card in fact the only other titled defended that night was the WWF Championship.

Wrestlemania XII featured just six matches, and for good reason the main event was a 60-minute WWE Iron Man Match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. Whichever Superstar scored the most decisions via any method pinfall, submission, countout or disqualification within a 60-minute span would be declared the winner. With no true winner declared after 60 minutes, the match was ordered to go into sudden death overtime. In overtime, Michaels was able to secure the victory and his first WWF Championship after hitting Hart with Sweet Chin Music. At a full 61 minutes and 52 seconds this Iron Man Match was the longest bout in Wrestlemania history and in a WWE poll taken in April 2000, fans picked the Michaels/Hart 60-minute WWE Iron Man Match as their favorite Wrestlemania match of all time.

WrestleMania XI was held in the Civic Center in Hartford, Connecticut it was the only Wrestlemania to be held in Connecticut the home of WWE corporate headquarters. Bret Hart defeated Bob Backlund in an I Quit Match at WrestleMania XI, with Roddy Piper serving as guest referee. It was the second consecutive Wrestlemania event at which Piper was the guest referee for Bret Hart’s match. Speaking of guest referees with baseball players on strike, American League umpire Larry Young stepped into the ring, as the referee for the match between the Undertaker and King Kong Bundy at WrestleMania XI this was the only time were an official from another professional sport would ref for the WWE. In a somewhat questionable move the WWF Championship match between Shawn Michaels and Diesel was not billed as the main event for Wrestlemania XI. Tickets sold out so quickly for Wrestlemania X at Madison Square Garden that the show was also shown at the Paramount Theater adjacent to MSG on closed-circuit television. Wrestlemania X featured two defenses of the WWE Championship. Yokozuna successfully defended his title against Lex Luger in the first defense, but lost the title to Bret Hart in his second defense. Bret Hart wrestled in the first and last match at Wrestlemania X. He was pinned by his brother Owen in the opening match, and he defeated Yokozuna to become WWE Champion in the final match. Kurt Angle = Bridge Burner

It looks like Kurt Angle must be really happy with his position on the TNA roster because in a resent chat with The Sun’s Wrestlcast Podcast he lets HHH, Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon know exactly what he thinks about them. Here are some choice quotes:

On Triple H burying him backstage when people cheered Kurt over John Cena – “Triple H obviously wanted to bash me because I was a better wrestler than him and I deserved to be in the spot that he was in but he was never going to give up, he’s Vince’s son-in-law.

“I had to deal with that stuff all the time. I’d wrestle Shawn Michaels and I’d get a little rough with him, then I’d get heat from Vince McMahon because I beat up on Shawn too much.

“So I’m like: ‘Well you know what, I’m tired of the two long-haired sissies. If they can’t go up against me then don’t put them up against me.”

On Vince McMahon – “TNA is where I want to be and I’m happy where I am. Vince McMahon can kiss my ass.”

So we have another ex-employee singing the same song I didn’t get pushed because HHH held me back, Vince hates me, Shawn Michaels is a jerk blah, blah, blah. Those things may or may not be true but I have to question the logic of speaking like that when there are only two games in town if things go sour in TNA(which has happened just ask Senshi) where does that leave you Kurt, just sayin. Anyway here’s the entire interview if your interested:

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania V

For the second year in a row Wrestlemania took place at the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, New Jersey this time the WWE had more seats added to the arena to increase the attendance from WrestleMania IV. Both Shawn Michaels and the Big Boss Man made their Wrestlemania debuts at WrestleMania V when they took on each other, Shawn and his partner Marty Jannetty(The Rockers) were defeated by Boss Man and Akeem. After not wrestling in the Wrestlemania main event for the first time at Wrestlemania IV Hulk Hogan returned to the main stage when he took on Randy “Macho Man” Savage. Hogan defeated Savage for the WWF Championship in 17 minuets and 54 seconds this would be the longest Wrestlemania main event to that date and was the first of three times Hogan would win the WWF Championship at a Wrestlemania. As a card carrying “Hogan Hater” even I have to say his performance at Wrestlemania V was amazing and probably should be considered one of the best Wrestlemania main events ever.

How a feud should be

I don’t think these two liked each other.

The wwe injury bullsh*t SAGA

If HBK was ready to appear on raw this week then it definitely makes good business sense to have had him appear a night earlier at the No Mercy ppv, that would have easily increased sales at least for the replays. Why would they even wait a whole day just to bring him on?

Moreover there are a few more things I do not understand. Why is it that some wrestlers recover so fast from injury and some take almost a whole year.I’m no doctor but I definitely do know that if an injury isn’t healed FULLY then it will recur with elevated repercussions. So while most of us were pretty sure that HBK would be off the shelf for a few more months,it was indeed surprising to see him back on Raw.I didn’t think that 4 months were enough to recover from a knee injury that required surgery.

I didn’t also think that 3 and a half months were enough for the Undertaker to heel from a torn tricep, the same injury that kept Batista out for almost a year.No wonder so many wwe guys take steroids and painkillers to perform through the pain and before long these drugs are doing something else.

As far as Cyber Sunday goes I’ve seen enough matches between Orton and HBK so that’s one match i WON’T be voting for and I don’t want to send HBK back into semi retirement..again.The guy has a family and I know for a fact that the wwe persuaded him into an early return. It’s also for the fact that taker isn’t fully healed that he’s been making sporadic appearances since unforgiven.

So then since Cyber Sunday ‘depends’ on fan votes I guess it’s up to you or is it really????

Cyber Sunday: WWE Changes Direction with Main Event

By now most of you probably know that the WWE has changed direction with their Cyber Sunday main event. As announced today on WWE.com, the Raw main event is going to feature Randy Orton defending his WWE Title against a wrestler of YOUR choosing: Jeff Hardy, Kennedy or HBK.

Originally, according to PW Insider, the plan was to do a Triple H/Orton match where the fans got to pick the stipulation: Hell in a Cell, No DQ or Falls Count Anywhere.

Personally, I actually would have preferred the first main event. It’s logical that Triple H and Orton would continue their feud after what happened at No Mercy, and it’s logical that it would have gone Hell in a Cell.

Now, they’ve done a 180, and HBK’s back early from an injury (and probably in pain), and he’s going to be in the main event. Granted, I prefer watching HBK over Triple H any day, but this just seems like haphazard booking. Plus, I was looking forward to seeing a big match where fans get to vote on the stipulation.

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this. What would you have preferred? The original plan for the main event, or what we get now?

Also, I wonder if internet fans could organize into a large enough group to foil WWE’s booking plans? Obviously, they are going to book the HBK v. Orton match assuming that HBK will win the vote. If would be funny to see the fans unite and somehow vote Kennedy or Hardy in…
