WWE Summerslam Main Event Confirmed

WWE Commentator Jim “JR” Ross confirmed in his latest Blog that Summerslam’s Main Event will be the Hell In A Cell Match between Edge and The Undertaker which was announced on Smackdown.

Here is what JR had to say on it.

Speaking of SummerSlam, no matter what else is booked on the PPV next month, the main event will be the Hell in a Cell match make no mistake about it. The franchise of HIAC is arguably as marketable as any title in the WWE and the return of the Undertaker from “exile” is big….really big Jerry.

Well, this may not be surprising seeing as Hell In A Cell has been the main event of a show since Brock Lesnar defended the WWE Championship back at No Mercy 2002 if it has only been One on One. The exception to this came at Unforgiven 2006 when D-Generation X faced The McMahons and The Big Show in a Hell In A Cell match.

SMVP’s View on the Match: If I was going to order this PPV, which I am not, The Hell In A Cell would be the only thing worth watching. Khali/HHH isn’t going to be a good match at all because Khali can’t wrestle for S*** and Triple H will carry the match. Henry/Hardy would be another one to watch because of the possibility that Hardy wins the ECW Title. Still I am not ordering this PPV for ONE MATCH.

VOTD: HBK/Bret/Taker feud at Summerslam

At SummerSlam 1997, Shawn Michaels was the guest referee when Bret Hart challenged Undertaker for the WWE Championship Match. Late in the match, Hart spat in Michaels face; an infuriated HBK grabbed a chair, but when he swung at Hart, the challenger ducked and Michaels wound up drilling Undertaker in the head instead. Hart took advantage of this mishap and pinned the Deadman, forcing Michaels to count the pinfall that gave Hart his fifth WWE Championship.

One of my favorite wrestling match finishes

—————————————————————————————-

The incident obviously enraged Undertaker, who turned his attention towards Michaels in the weeks following SummerSlam. As a result, the Deadman inadvertently became partially responsible for DX’s formation. Two weeks after SummerSlam, Undertaker & Mankind were the opponents when Commissioner Slaughter forced Michaels and Triple H to team up for the first time. Michaels and Triple H were successful that night, and continued to be a thorn in the Deadman’s side leading to Ground Zero

WWE One Night Stand Discussion: Edge v. Undertaker, TLC

One Night Stand

Editor’s Note: As usual, no posting over this until tomorrow…

OK. First off, can anyone tell me WHY Kane is on this poster? He’s not even wrestling in the event, which makes no sense at all since he is the ECW Champion. I know it’s no longer “ECW One Night Stand,” but still, put the damn ECW champ on there!

Anyways, here’s the card for tonight’s show:

  • TLC match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Undertaker v. Edge
  • Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship: Randy Orton v. Triple H(c)
  • First Blood Match: John Cena v. JBL
  • Stretcher Match: Batista v. Shawn Michaels
  • Falls Count Anywhere: Jeff Hardy v. Umaga
  • Singapore Cane Match for the Number One Contender for the ECW Championship: Big Show v. John Morrison v. Chavo Guerrero v. CM Punk
  • I Quit Match: Melina v. Beth Pheonix

You know what? I’ll give you guys fair warning: I’m probably going to order this show, meaning it will most likely SUCK! Eat that!

But seriously, the TLC match should be awesome, and I’m sure HBK will give us a good show in the stretcher match. Also, Jeff Hardy v. Umaga will probably be pretty crazy; since it’s Falls Count Anywhere, I can see Jeff doing something wild.

I don’t have much to say about Orton v. Triple H, but you’d figure they’ll have a pretty good match, since they’ll be trying to top the last Last Man Standing. All in all, this might not be a bad show–I just wish WWE would space out the gimmick matches more and not put them ALL on one show.

Discuss One Night Stand here.

WWE Judgment Day Discussion: Orton v. HHH in a Steel Cage

Editor’s Note: As always, no posting over this until tomorrrow!

First off, let me say this: can anyone believe Booker T actually made a PPV ad back in the day? I had completely forgotten!

Anyways, it’s time for another WWE PPV, Judgment Day. Here’s the card:

  • Steel Cage Match for the WWE Championship: Randy Orton v. Triple H(c)
  • WWE Tag Team Championship: Kane and CM Punk v. John Morrison and The Miz(c)
  • World Heavyweight Championship: Edge v. The Undertaker(c)
  • Triple Threat for the WWE Women’s Championship: Melina v. Beth Pheonix v. Mickie James(c)
  • JBL v. John Cena
  • Chris Jericho v. Shawn Michaels
  • Mark Henry v. Big Show (not listed, but supposedly added)

And there you have it. Now let me tell you why this PPV might not be that bad. Yeah, I said it. It’s actually not that bad of a lineup, regardless of the crappy build that they’ve  had.

Mark Henry v. Show is obviously a filler match, so let’s just throw that out right off the bat. Jericho v. Michaels may be a short feud-advancing match, especially with Batista promising to show up, so I don’t have high hopes for it, either. That being said, you know these two guys will have a good match leading up to whatever kind of screwy ending there is. I’m sure it will set up a triple threat match for next month.

JBL v. John Cena…I really don’t know what to think about that one. It’s a wild card, but it could be interesting. At least it’s something different.

The women’s triple threat should be a pretty good women’s title match, especially when Melina and Beth Pheonix start turning on each other. The tag match could really go either way, as well, but with Morrison and CM Punk in it, there should be some interesting spots.

I’m hoping this Edge v. Undertaker match will be the match they should have had at Wrestlemania. I’d love to see an all-out brawl–we haven’t seen Edge have a really good, wild match in a while.  I could be way off base, but I think this match will deliever.

Finally, we get to the steel cage match. I think this match really could have been built better, playing more on Orton and Triple H’s history, which would have made the steel cage much more meaningful. Still, these guys will probably go to great links to make this a brutal, bloody steel cage match, which we really haven’t seen in a while in the WWE. I think the cage was a good choice for the main event, and hopefully it won’t be a let down.

So, I guess it boils down to this question: are you going to buy this show? I’ve considered it since I don’t think it’s that bad of a card wrestling-wise, but it will be on a whim if I do.

As always, discuss the PPV here.

VOTD: Kane’s Debut

WWE should have Kane’s face be broken by Big Daddy V, the same way that they did to Undertaker(by vicera).
After this, Kane would take a break off and later return with the mask(with a reasoning for having it on).

Good idea?

VOTD: HBK vs Taker

Damn, we need this feud again!

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania XX

90576.jpg

Wrestlemania returned to “The World’s Most Famous Arena” with Wrestlemania XX this was the third time Madison Square Garden hosted the event. The United States Championship was defended for the first time in Wrestlemania history when Big Show faced off against John Cena who was making his Wrestlemania debut. As a result of a pre-match stipulation, Molly Holly had her head shaven clean by Victoria when she was unable to capture the Women’s Championship. The Rock made his very last appearance as a competitor in the WWE at Wrestlemania XX when he re-united the Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection in a Handicap Match against Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista and Ric Flair). After an extended absence, Paul Bearer returned to WWE at Wrestlemania XX when a accompanied The Undertaker to the ring for his match against Kane.

Chris Benoit had been waiting 18 years to finally get a shot at the World Championship after winning the Royal Rumble the then SmackDown! Superstar decided to jump ship to the RAW brand to face Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. Shawn Michaels interrupted the contract signing, though, and hit Benoit with the Sweet Chin Music. With Benoit knocked out, Michaels signed the contract. General Manager Eric Bischoff settled the controversy and made the match a Triple Threat Match. During the epic battle Triple H looked ready to lock in the Pedigree on Benoit but Benoit somehow reversed it into the Crippler Crossface, and with Michaels out on the floor, Triple H tapped out. This was Benoit’s second time winning the World Heavy Weight Championship but was his first and only time holding it since both the title and Benoit moved to the WWE.

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania X8

Wrestlemania X8 a.k.a Wrestlemania XVIII marked only the second time the legendary event was held outside the United States (both held in Toronto’s SkyDome). Wrestlemania X8 was Diamond Dallas Page’s second Wrestlemania in the SkyDome. DDP was also a part of Wrestlemania VI when he drove the car that took The Honky Tonk Man and Greg Valentine to the ring. After returning from a serious quad injury, Jericho reinjured Triple H’s leg in the weeks heading into their main event match. But The Game was able to prevail, Triple H was able to hit the patented Pedigree for the win and the Undisputed Championship. Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania X-Seven

Wrestlemania X-Seven a.k.a. Wrestlemania XVII was the first Wrestlemania held in the state of Texas at the Astrodome on April 1, 2001. That night the WWE established a new all-time record for the facility at 67,925 fans. or the second Wrestlemania in a row, Edge & Christian captured the World Tag Team Championship in a match that also included the Dudleys and the Hardy Boyz. Like Wrestlemania 2000’s version, it was a Ladder Match, but this time it also included tables and chairs, officially making it the first TLC Match in Wrestlemania history. Wrestlemania X-Seven marked the Wrestlemania in-ring debut of the man who conceptualized the event, Vince McMahon, when he took on his son Shane. Also that night Chyna made her Wrestlemania in ring debut and defeated Ivory to win the WWF Womans Championship.

At Wrestlemania X-Seven for the second time “Stone Cold” Steve Austin would square off against The Rock in a Wrestlemania main event. Stone Cold won their previous main event at Wrestlemania XV, and the partisan Texas crowd was clearly on the Rattlesnake’s side for this rematch. The intrigue in the classic bout grew as Vince McMahon made his way to ringside. Vince soon revealed his reason for being there siding with the Texas Rattlesnake and helping his once bitter rival Stone Cold regain the WWF Championship. With this victory over The Rock Stone Cold’s Wrestlemania record moved to 3-0 while The Rock’s dropped to 0-3.

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania XV

The First Union Center in Philadelphia, PA hosted Wrestlemania XV. The first Hardcore Championship Match in Wrestlemania history, featuring Al Snow, Billy Gunn and Hardcore Holly, occurred at Wrestlemania XV. Also that night the first and only Hell In A Cell match in Wrestlemania history took place between The Undertaker and Big Boss Man. One of the more unique contests at Wrestlemania XV was the “Brawl for All” match, pitting pro boxer Butterbean against Bart Gunn in a shoot boxing match. Just 34 seconds into the first round of action, Butterbean KO’d Bart and scored the win. Although the loss was effectively the end of Bart Gunn’s WWE carrier because he KO’d the well respected “Doctor Death” Steve Williams in the second round of the “Brawl for All” tournament he was able to continue his wrestling carrier in the independent circuit and in Japan under the name Mike Barton. Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett defended the World Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania XV making Jarrett the third different championship partner that Owen had a Wrestlemania event. At Wrestlemania XI, Owen and Yokozuna won the World Tag Team Championship, and at Wrestlemania 13, Owen and the British Bulldog held the titles.

The legendary rivalry between WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon and Stone Cold had spanned more than a year when Wrestlemania XV rolled around. McMahon had chosen The Rock to be his champion, and it was he and Stone Cold who would battle it out at Wrestlemania XV. At first Mr. McMahon appointed himself special referee for the main event, but Commissioner Shawn Michaels overruled McMahon, saying a traditional WWE official would do the job. It was later ruled that the winner of the Mankind/Big Show match on the under card would get to be the special guest referee in the main event. The winner of that match Mick Foley counted the pinfall in the final match of WrestleMania XV, when Stone Cold defeated The Rock to become the WWE Champion making Stone Cold the first man ever to win the WWE Championship at consecutive Wrestlemania events.

Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania XIV

The Fleetcenter in Boston, MA played host to Wrestlemania XIV and there were tons of firsts. Wrestlemania XIV marked the first time the European Championship was defended at a Wrestlemania and it was also the first and only time that the Light Heavyweight Championship was defended at a Wrestlemania event. For the first time WWE Hall of Famer announcing duo Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross called the event without Vince McMahon. Pete Rose made his first of several Wrestlemania appearances when he was attacked by Kane, Rose’s continued Wrestlemania appearances earned him a spot in the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame. That night in an interview with Gennifer Flowers The Rock used the term “if you smell what The Rock is cooking” for the first time. In yet another first The Undertaker faced off with his kayfabe brother Kane for the very first time.

The main event for Wrestlemania XIV was “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels(c) for the WWF Championship. Because of his severe injury back injury many thought this would be Shawn Michaels last match ever but of course HBK eventually returned to the ring four years later. To maintain safety in the WWF Championship match Mr. McMahon hired a special enforcer “Iron” Mike Tyson, the self-proclaimed baddest man on the planet. Despite the fact that it appeared as though Tyson had joined Michaels, Triple H and Chyna in D-Generation X in the weeks prior to event, Iron Mike was still allowed to play his part in the match. In the end, Tyson proved to be completely impartial. In fact, when the appointed official was unable to continue due to injury, Mike even counted the three count, ending the match and giving Stone Cold his first WWE Championship. That moment is considered the beginning of the WWE’s “Attitude Era”.

Interesting Headlines

Here are a few interesting wrestling headlines for today.

MVP Qualifies for the Money In The Bank Match

Looks like there will be no Matt Hardy/MVP singles match for the US Title at Wrestlemania as MVP qualified for the Money In The Bank match at a Smackdown/ECW house show this weekend. It was reported last week that Matt Hardy is at 100% and ready to return to the ring and since the number of MITB participants is now at 6 if the WWE decides to go with just a 6 man MITB instead of 8 like last year Matt could be left out in the cold. Also assuming that both Jeff Hardy and MVP retain the championships this would be the first Wrestlemania ever that doesn’t have a US or IC title match on the card. WTF Vince!!!

Wrestlemania 25 Location Revealed

Look like Lex has lucked out it has been confirmed that Wrestlemania 25 will be held on April 5, 2009 at the Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The venue is similar in size to Ford Field which means they will probably get around 75,000 tickets for the event.

Umaga Brand Change and Push

It is being rumored that Umaga will be moved to the Smackdown brand after Wrestlemania as the WWE is looking to put him in a long program with the Undertaker which will conclude with at World Title Match at Summer Slam.

Casket Match on Raw

At this time the only confirmed match for tonights 3 hour Raw special is Untertaker vs Mark Henry in a “Casket Match” which is a return match from Wrestlemania 22.

Undertaker and the Druids

Don’t know if you guys saw this, but WWE.com has a video up of the Undertaker being carried out of the arena by the druids after Edge cashed in and won the title.

This was actually a pretty cool segment, and would have been a fitting end to the show, I think. It would have closed the proverbial chapter on the Undertaker’s story. Personally, I think they should have taken out the Miz match, and showed this instead.
